CHAPTER EIGHT

“What’s all this?” a soft voice asked, pushing back Denny’s hair, and he looked up in horror. His wife stood over him, beautiful as the sunrise, and shining and perfect while he was chained to a chair across from the cell where Adam Campbell had spent the night mocking him.

“They’ve ruined my fat suit,” he told Lila, wanting to lay his head against her chest. If he were perfectly honest with himself, he was ready to weep into her, but instead he giggled low and hoarse.

“They did more than that, darling,” she told him, pressing her lacy handkerchief against his cracked and bleeding lip.

“Laura! Laura, my love! You can do better than your fat fool.”

Lila didn’t even turn despite the way Campbell wasn’t nearly so disgusting as Denny. “They said you got arrested for casing a mansion?”

Her voice was soft and gentle, her usual laziness faded into a barely restrained something.

“Must’ve been following me.”

She nodded. “They said you were probably selling stolen jewels at the jeweler and then you were casing a mansion, and they found you with stolen property.”

A stab of emotion that might have been outrage or might have been hurt made his breath catch. “Bought you pink pearls,” he said, wincing. He ignored the romantic whispers of Campbell. “I wanted a really long strand for you, but it was too expensive for pink ones. The fellow I asked about it before had a piece made with pink crystals and white gold links. I was going to surprise you. They took it.” The words came out choked.

Lila nodded, pressing a kiss against his forehead, despite the grime. “Sounds wonderful. They’ll give it back.”

“They probably won’t,” Denny told her in anguish. “They don’t listen to me. They think because they found me in the milktruck and someone saw you-know-who that I must have done it.”

Lila scoffed. “You were in the truck.”

“I know! I was only asking the constable a question when they took me in outside of Tana’s. I was just gathering my thoughts outside of Vi’s, and they wouldn’t even ask her. They just said I was peeping and casing and they arrested me! I even had a receipt for the pearls!”

“Hmmm.” Lila shook her head and rose. “They won’t keep you this time, love.”

Denny didn’t doubt it. Lila was far more useful than he was. “I was going to give you the pearls and ask you to help me with Tana. I was trying to figure out who would be the best partner, and it’s always you.”

Lila brushed his hair out of his face and he leaned against her, while they both ignored Campbell. It didn’t take long for a constable to appear. It was a different one, and he was far more…careful when he unlocked Denny.

“This way, sir.”

“Sir!” Campbell shouted. “Sir! He’s a beast. Have you seen my face?”

The new constable ignored Campbell outside of snapping, “Quiet you.”
